Riverside equipping new preschool room (01-30-10) Parents will be happy to see that their preschool students will soon have a place of their own at Riverside Gymnastics Academy. The Riverside board recently negotiated a deal to use the large studio room on the south side of the building for preschool classes. Coaches are currently working to outfit the new space with appropriate equipment. The board also granted $300 towards the purchase of a junior-sized bar structure.

Northern Wasco PUD awards $10,000 for tumble pit Gymnasts are juiced up on flying into a massive mound of blue foam at the end of our rectangular building. The girls can’t help but smile when they get a chance to flip into the new tumbling pit at Riverside Gymnastics. The tumble pit installed in Aug. 2009 at the nonprofit was made possible by a $10,000 economic development grant from the Northern Wasco PUD. “It’s really fun because you can jump and have a soft landing,” said Alena Salazar, 9. “ I like the pit because you get to do flips into the pit,” added Emma Smith, 7. Riverside instructors Mike and Candy Smith are enjoying the motivation the new pit brings. The pit also is an essential tool to safely train gymnasts learning complicated aerial moves. “I like it because when you land on your head it does not hurt,” said Jocelyn Hernandez, 10.Mike Smith and several volunteer parents recently installed the pit to ready the gym for the fall season.“This grant for the tumble pit was huge for us,” said Riverside Treasurer Stan Hinatsu, who couldn‘t thank the PUD enough. “It opens up so many opportunities for us to better train kids and get them ready for competition. Plus these kids just love it. We can’t keep them out of it.”Riverside also recently erected a new high bar thanks to a $3,000 Fred Meyer Foundation grant. The nonprofit is pushing into much uncharted territory in 2010. Instructors are taking their senior students into the optional program -level 7 and up. Optionals are a break-away from the compulsory meets most of the girls have attended. They give students much more latitude to develop their own floor routines, complete with choice of music and choreography. Also in 2010, Riverside intends to host its own meet in the fall - a first for the nonprofit.
