Riverside Gymnasts Stick Top Scores at State (April, 2009) Riverside Gymnastic’s Allison Kortge vaulted to first place at the Oregon State Championship in Eugene on April 25 and 26.
Kortge, 15, competing at level 6, emerged at the top in the senior division, age 14 and up. She scored an all-around 35.95 to climb to the top of the podium. Kortge earned top scores for her vault and beam and took second on uneven bars and fourth place in the floor exercise.
“I started off good on uneven bars and that boosted my confidence,” Kortge said.
Kortge finished her rotation of events with vault.
“I just kept thinking about how it feels to do it right, and the coaches told me to run fast to just kind of go for it without being nervous,” she said. Her straight-legged flip off the table earned her a 9.475
“My hard work really paid off in improving my score,” she said, noting her personal best was a fourth place at state in prior years. “We really came together as a team and went for it.”
Kortge’s scores helped the level 6 team take home the fifth place trophy.
Gymnasts had to earn an all-around qualifying score during the regular season before being invited to compete at the state championships, which were held at Churchill High School.
“The team trained very hard for this meet,” said coach Mike Smith, “Our gymnasts peaked well, so we had a lot of life-time bests. And it’s always great to get some state champions.”
Hannah Hinshaw, 12, and Kendyl Kumm, 9, also of Riverside Gymnastics Academy in The Dalles were crowned state champs for their performances in the vault competition.
Hinshaw, competing at level 5, scored a 9.45 for her vault.
“I was really shocked. It was my high score,” she said, noting that her best event is usually bars. “My best score on vault up until then was 8.9. I was shocked. It was that huge.”
Kumm scored a 9.55 on vault on her way to an all-around score of 36.775, which put her fifth in the state for her age.
Kumm said performing in front of hundreds in packed bleachers was “a bit scary,” but ultimately “fun,” especially when she took first in vault.
The team, which is coached by Mike, Candy and Sarah Smith, put in a strong performance and is making a name for itself throughout the state after just a few years of competing
“Our gymnasts grew immensely from this experience,” Mike Smith said. Riverside will compete again in the fall season.
